Materials:

One player per team draws a card from the shuffled “deck”. The highest draw determines the starting team. Return the cards to the “deck” and re-shuffle.

The starting team draws a card. The suit of the card determines which Go Factor card their question will come from. The number of the card determines the question number (Ace = 1).

They turn over the Go Factor card of that suit and find their question. They use the algebra tiles to answer the question. They record their question and answer on their Scoring Sheets.

The other team draws a card and the process is repeated.

After all 20 cards are drawn and all questions are answered, together the two teams use the Answer Sheet to check the answers and assign scores. They receive 2 points for a correct answer, and 0 points if they did not get the question correct.

After scoring all the questions, the teams add up their scores and the highest score wins.

Modications that the Math Department brainstormed during the session include:

Create different levels of questions to have, for example, 3 different games for students to play.

  • give students expressions with the leading coefficient of 1 and a positive constant term
  • give students expressions with the leading coefficient of 1 and a negative constant term
  • give students expressions to factor with leading coefficient greater than or equal to one and with mixed signs on the terms

Modify the game to use when you want student to practice any skill, such as integration, simple linear equations, order of operations.

Modify the game to use in any subject!
