We’re all feeling the famous Barcelona summer heat as we swing into July. I hope you have found your own favorite hang to keep cool and enjoy the summer.

June’s Happy Hour, held at Pomarada on Wednesday the 18th had a great turnout in spite of the tough competition posed by the Spain-Greece match on the same evening. It was great to see everyone!

Our next Happy Hour will be on Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at 21:00 in Pomarada, Paseo de Gracia, 78. This will be our last Happy Hour of the summer before we break for the season, but we’ll be back in September!

As Victor mentioned from atop his customary chair in the last Happy Hour, we have some great new Corporate Sponsors that have joined us recently and we’d like to heartily thank them for their support of the American Society:
Gold Corporate Sponsors:
American Airlines
Silver Corporate Sponsors:
Barcelona Management Institute (BMI)
Quiron Grupo Hospitalario

ASB’s “Political Pundit” and “Tertuliano” Victor Horcasitas was seen once again on Spain’s airwaves: first on BarcelonaTV’s round table discussion regarding the implications of Senator Obama having secured the Democrat’s nomination with La Vaguardia’s journalist Xavier Mas de Xaxas; this was subsequently followed by a nationwide audience interview on Tele5 to introduce Spaniards to the Republican candidate John McCain and discuss his chances for the general election in November. Stay tuned for upcoming TV appearances…the ASB opinion is increasingly sought after!

Also, as you know, we have been busy putting together our Independence Day Party (!!!) and we’re really excited about the upcoming festivities this weekend! We’ll be celebrating this Sunday, July 6th from 16:00 to 20:00 on the tree-lined terrace of Rembrandt, c/Marina 20. The Hard Rock Cafe has generously sponsored our celebration again this year with their amazing donation of their delicious hamburgers with all of the fixin’s, chips & salsa and sodas. AND in addition, there will be hummus & baba ganouj, a variety of salads, beer, wine, water, mojitos and desert! We’ll have a raffle, an inflatable castle and entertainment for the kids as well! Don’t forget, children 6 and under get in free!

Sign up today by sending us an email to admin@amersoc.com with the names of those in your party - and ages for the children that will be attending!

It will be another great Independence Day bash & I hope to see you there!

Interested in membership?

Did you know that you don't have to be American to be a member of the American Society?

The membership of the American Society of Barcelona is a wonderful mixture of nationalities; we are about half American and half European, the largest group of Europeans being Catalan. What draws most people to our organization is a desire to be involved in the English speaking community of Barcelona, both for social interaction and business networking. We sponsor a variety of gatherings throughout the year such as business luncheons, cultural outings, traditional American and local events and celebrations, informative speeches and much more.

Would you like to volunteer?

The American Society is a non-profit organization run entirely by volunteers. If you have ideas you’d like to share let us know! As always, we look forward to hearing from you; and, if you have a little time, we’d love to have you pitch in. The American Society only exists because of the wonderful, talented people who volunteer their time and resources. So, if you have an idea about how you’d like to improve the American Society, don’t be shy, jump right in! It’s a lot of fun and a great way to meet people in the community.

Refund Policy

In order to cancel a reservation for an event, please contact admin@amersoc.com
at least 48 hours prior to an event. During peak holiday or conference periods cancellation and amendment charges may occasionally vary due to some hotels or venues having more strict cancellations policies that the ASB must assume. In these cases we will advise you by email.

It is the policy of the ASB not to provide any refunds for cancellations unless the party communicates their decision in writing via email to admin@amersoc.com at least 48 hours prior to an event. In order to organize activities, the American Society is asked to make financial commitments on behalf of its membership and guests. When people sign up and register for ASB activities, the Society makes advanced payment to venues, hotels, transportation services, caterers, support staff, etc. Signing up for an event also hinders others from attending when there is limited capacity for an event.

The ASB is a non-profit organization managed by a volunteer staff, and we are delighted to host events of interest to the American and English speaking community of Barcelona.

We appreciate your understanding. We not only look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events, we would love to have you support us in managing an event.

Thank you.

On July 17 at 7pm, they are organizing a free networking cocktail with Brian McCary, Executive Director of Bausch & Lomb who will give a speech entitled "Simplifying Tough Decisions." Brian will use examples drawn from some of the good (and bad) decisions he's made over the years at Bausch & Lomb to illustrate some of the traps of decision making, and some practical approaches he's used for avoiding these traps. Event takes place at 7pm at Lemon Twist on Calle Paris 186. RSVP required, please contact +34 93 451 37 23 or email pr@barcelonami.org.
