Dear Parents,

Currently the BFIS Learning Center offers Teacher/Student one-to-one tutoring and NHS sponsored peer tutoring.  In an effort to enhance the abilities of students the Learning Center is launching a new workshop: "The Academic Toolbox: What Students Need to Succeed".  This is a 6 week study skills workshop that focuses on materials management, time management, learning styles, goal setting and study skills (2 sessions).  The workshop is designed to run for 3 separate levels- ES, MS, and HS.  The workshops will meet after school for 1 hour (4:20-5:20pm); MS on Wednesdays and HS on Thursdays.  The workshops will begin the week of November 12th.  Shortly, we will open an ES workshop as well. The cost for the workshop (6 weeks/sessions) is 120 Euros.  If have questions about the workshops please contact Jason Hershberger . If you would like to know if this is the right kind of workshop for your son/daughter please contact Kathy Manu for ES students or Monna McDiarmid for MS/HS students.

Actualmente, el Centro de aprendizaje de BFIS ofrece tutorías individuales alumno/profesor y tutorías organizadas por la National Honor Society.  En un intento de potenciar las aptitudes de los alumnos, el centro de aprendizaje ha creado un nuevo taller: "The Academic Toolbox: What Students Need to Succeed". Se trata de un taller sobre técnicas de estudio de 6 semanas de duración en el que se centrarán en la materia, el tiempo invertido, los estilos de aprendizaje, los objetivos a conseguir y las técnicas de estudio (2 sesiones). El taller está diseñado para cubrir tres niveles: primaria, MS y HS. El horario de los talleres será de 4.20 a 5.20 de la tarde (MS los miércoles y HS los jueves). Todos comenzarán el 12 de noviembre, y en breve anunciaremos la fecha del de  primaria. El coste del taller (6 semanas/sesiones) será de 120 euros. Si tienen alguna duda sobre los talleres pueden ponerse en contacto con Jason Hershberger . Si desean saber si este es un taller adecuado para su hijo/a pueden escribir a Kathy Manu o a Monna McDiarmid (para MS y HS).

National Honor Society Peer Tutoring

The Michael Potter Chapter of the National Honor Society is an elite group of students who demonstrate the attributes of service, scholarship, character and leadership.  One of the annual goals of the NHS is to provide academic support to students in need of extra assistance outside of the regular classroom.  NHS students offer support to students in all subjects and all grade levels.  Students wishing to receive assistance from members of the NHS are first required to discuss the possibility of having a tutor with their appropriate grade level counselor.

Tutorías con alumnos de la National Honor Society

El Artículo Michael Potter de la Nacional Honor Society consiste en un grupo de alumnos de élite que demuestra disposición, cultura, carácter y liderazgo. Uno de los objetivos anuales de la NHS es proporcionar apoyo académico a aquellos alumnos que necesiten ayuda fuera de las clases regulares. Los alumnos de la NHS ofrecen apoyo en todas las asignaturas y en todos los cursos. Aquellos alumnos que deseen ayuda de los miembros de la NHS deben consultarlo antes con la consejera correspondiente a su curso.

Tutoring in the Elementary School

The tutoring program at the Elementary School level involves one-on-one instruction by a BFIS teacher, to students in grades 1-5 who benefit from additional support.  Tutors focus on a range of domains, including homework help, the reinforcement and review of fundamental academic skills, as well as assistance in the areas of organization and study practices.  Tutors serve as advocates to the Elementary School students and engage in dialogue with the homeroom teacher as well as parents, to ensure that students are given the greatest opportunity possible to be successful at school.

Tutoring in the Middle School

The tutoring program at the Middle School level involves one-on-one instruction by a teacher qualified to provide instruction in specific subject matters, to students in grades 6-8 who need additional support.  Tutors focus on the concepts involved in the subject matter at hand, in addition to helping students in the areas of organization, study skills, and stress management.  Tutors serve as advocates to the Middle School students and are in frequent communication with all relevant teachers as well as parents, in an effort to see that the students are given the tools to become as successful as possible at school. 

Tutoring in the High School

At the high school level, the Counselor will serve as a liaison between the school and the home to help ensure that students in need of one-on-one tutoring are matched with qualified and appropriate tutors. These tutors are primarily teachers although the group of potential tutors includes a few qualified instructors outside of our school community. The student, or parent may take the initiative in requesting a tutor for a particular subject or subjects. This recommendation may also come from a teacher who observes a student struggling and has been unable to address the student's needs in class or outside of class during breaks and lunch periods. Students on academic probation will be required to work with a tutor on a weekly basis until the student achieves sufficiently high academic standing as to be released from academic probation (a 1.7 grade point average or higher).Students and tutors set their own schedules, although they typically meet at BFIS on a weekday afternoon between 4:15 and 5:15 p.m. Payment for on-campus tutoring is processed by the Business Office. Ultimately, the goal of tutoring is to help the student identify the areas in which he/she struggles academically and to understand the nature of this challenge, to develop goals for success in these areas, and to help the student become more self-sufficient to the point that he/she no longer requires the services of a tutor. Please note that as of October 19, 2007, we are not able to recommend Science or Math tutors at the high school level as those teachers accepting students are already fully booked.

Tutorías de primaria

El programa de tutorías de primaria consiste en tutorías individuales con un profesor de BFIS destinado a alumnos de los grados 1-5 que deseen apoyo adicional. Los tutores cubren diferentes áreas como ayuda con la tarea, refuerzo y revisión de las aptitudes académicas, además de ayuda con la organización y técnicas de estudio. Los tutores sirven de apoyo de los alumnos de primaria y mantienen conversaciones con el profesor/tutor de clase del alumno y con los padres, para de esta forma asegurar que los alumnos tienen las mejores oportunidades para conseguir buenos resultados académicos.

Tutorías de Middle School

El programa de tutorías de Middle School está destinado a alumnos de los grados 6-8 que necesiten apoyo extraescolar. Consiste en tutorías individuales con un profesor de BFIS cualificado para enseñar las asignaturas específicas. Los tutores se centrarán en los conceptos específicos de la asignatura y ayudarán a los alumnos en la organización, las técnicas de estudio y el control del estrés. Los tutores sirven de apoyo a los alumnos de Middle School y frecuentemente mantienen conversaciones con los profesores del alumno así como con los padres, para de esta forma asegurar que los alumnos cuentan con las herramientas necesarias para conseguir los mejores resultados académicos posibles.

Tutorías de High School

A un nivel de secundaria, la Consejera servirá de unión entre colegio y casa para asegurarse de que aquellos alumnos que necesitan tutorías individuales reciben clases al nivel apropiado y con profesores debidamente cualificados. El grupo de profesores es primordialmente del colegio, pero también incluye a algunos profesionales externos a la comunidad. El alumno o el padre pueden tomar la iniciativa de solicitar los servicios de un tutor para una/s asignatura/s en particular. Esta recomendación también puede venir de algún profesor que observe que el alumno tiene dificultades y que no haya conseguido cubrir las necesidades del alumno en clase, en los descansos o en el período del comedor. Los alumnos que estén en Academic Probation (en período de prueba) también deberán trabajar con un tutor cada semana hasta que el alumno consiga unos resultados (1.7 de media o superior) que le permitan salir de la Academic Probation. Los alumnos y los tutores fijan su propio horario, aunque suele ser días entre semana de 4.15 a 5.15 de la tarde. El pago de las tutorías dentro del colegio se realizará través de la oficina de administración (Business Office). El objetivo principal de las tutorías es ayudar al alumno a identificar las áreas en las que presenta dificultad y entender la naturaleza del reto, desarrollar los objetivos para obtener buenos resultados y ayudar a que el alumno se sienta más seguro hasta el punto de no necesitar servicios de tutoría.

Les informamos de que a día de hoy (19 de octubre), no podemos recomendar a tutores de Ciencias o Matemáticas para alumnos de High School, ya que los profesores ya tienen el horario completo.

The BFIS Learning Center

The BFIS Learning Center is the academic enrichment portion of the school's after school activities program.  BFIS realizes the importance of offering not just artistic and athletic opportunities for students to grow but also the need to offer enrichment opportunities for students' intellectual growth.

Currently, the center is made up of three styles of enrichment for students.  First, the center offers one-to-one teacher to student tutoring. This tutoring for MS and HS students is arranged through MS. McDiarmid and for ES students through Ms. Manu. Second, the National Honor Society sponsors peer one-to-one tutoring where NHS members tutor students in a variety of subjects. NHS peer tutoring can be arranged through Mr. Balog. Finally, the center offers small group study skills workshops for MS and HS students, called: "The Academic Toolbox". Placement in workshop can be arranged by contacting Mr. Hershberger.

Centro de aprendizaje" de BFIS

El centro de aprendizaje de BFIS es la parte de enriquecimiento académico del programa de actividades extraescolares. BFIS es consciente de la importancia de no sólo ofrecer oportunidades artísticas o deportivas a los alumnos, por lo que tenemos en cuenta la necesidad de ofrecer oportunidades de enriquecimiento intelectual para nuestros alumnos. Actualmente el centro cuenta con tres formas diferentes de enriquecimiento. Primeramente, el centro ofrece tutorías individuales con profesor. Las tutorías de Middle School se organizan a través de Ms McDiarmid y las de primaria con Ms Manu. Además, los miembros de la National Honor Society impartirán clases individuales de diferentes asignaturas a compañeros. Las tutorías de NHS se organizan a través de Mr. Balog. Finalmente, el centro también tiene a disposición de los alumnos pequeños grupos de técnicas de estudio para los alumnos de Middle School y High School denominados "The Academic Toolbox".
