Have you ever thought about what life was like hundreds and hundreds of years ago? This year, we will become explorers of the past and present, making connections between people and places, and learning about different ways of life! Welcome to Grade 6 World History!

Course Information:

World History 6 focuses on Ancient Civilizations. This course will help you to understand the importance of the past and how the past has shaped our lives today. In addition, you will gain knowledge on current events around the world, both nationally and internationally, and gain an appreciation for other cultures. This year, we will be studying the history, geography, cultures, changes, etc., of the following areas: Mesopotamia, Asia, China, Eastern/Southeast Asia, India, Egypt, Africa, and the Aztecs. We will be using the textbooks People, Places and Change and Journey Across Time.

Course Materials:

Please bring the following materials to class with you:

 One binder and A4 paper (lined)
 One notebook (large) for in-class work/notes
 Pens, pencils, markers, etc.

Course Components:

Throughout the school year, you will be frequently assessed in order to monitor your progress and understanding of the course material. You will be assessed on the following:

 Writing - includes current events, responses, paragraphs, essays, etc.
 Projects - both individual and group projects
 Presentations - both individual and group presentations
 Quizzes/Tests
 Classwork and Homework

Grading System:

As outlined in your student handbook, letter grades represent the following:

A- = 90-93% C- = 70-72%
B+ = 87-89% D+ = 67-69%

B- = 80-82% D- = 60-62%
C+ = 77-79% F = 0-59%

Classroom Policies and Procedures:

 Absences and Missed Assignments: All students are expected to attend class, to be prepared, and to be on time. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to catch up on all the material (handouts, notes, assignments) covered during your absence. Remember to come and see me the first day you are back at school to discuss missed material.

 Late Work: All assignments must be handed in on the due date at the beginning of the class. Any work handed in after this point, even if on the same day, will be considered late. All late work will receive a penalty of -10% for up to three days. After this time, work will not be accepted. Please be sure to hand in all assignments directly to me (do not leave it with another teacher). If you are having troubles with your work, please come and see me! It is better to talk to me about an assignment, rather than not handing something in.

 Academic Integrity: Cheating or plagiarism will not be tolerated under any circumstances. If caught plagiarizing, copying homework, looking at your neighbor's test, etc., you will receive an automatic zero, without a chance to make up the assignment. Please familiarize yourself with the school's policy found in your handbook.

 Speaking English: Please remember that you are here to improve your understanding of the English language. This is your opportunity to practice your language skills and to practice thinking in a foreign language. Although it is not always easy, when you enter the classroom, be sure to make the switch and always try to speak in English.

 Teacher's Note: My expectations for you are high: I expect you to work to your best abilities, to set high goals, to respect the classroom policies, and to contribute to the overall enjoyment and success of this course for everyone involved. I challenge each of you to take an active role in your learning; remember that you are not only here to learn from your teacher, but from each other as well. I am sure we will have a wonderful year together - good luck to each of you for a successful year!
