We will find inspiration from other women artists of the past and present, and through mixing media and working collaboratively we will work create large scale pieces to be displayed around the school and to brighten your home. Bring your ideas for projects and willingness to be surprised by what can be made in the art studio!!

BFIS will run an after school mathematics club from October 6th until mid April to prepare students for the Middle, Junior and Senior Mathematics ISMTF (International Schools Mathematics Teachers Foundation) competition. A multiple of three club members from High School and Middle School will be selected to represent BFIS in the corresponding competition. The club will involve one after school session to practice logic reasoning and problem solving strategies. Eleven sessions will be offered first semester to all students.
Students representing BFIS at these competitions will be selected at the end of the first semester. Students involved in the senior competition will have four additional sessions, those involved in the junior three additional sessions, those involved in the MS competition, ten additional sessions.
Parents and students will be given additional information regarding math club sessions in the second semester. Travel and registration fees will be announced conveniently, prior to the students’ corresponding competition. Students must be in good academic standing to represent BFIS in these competitions.
All students in MS and HS are more than welcome to participate in this activity!

A partir del 6 de octubre y hasta mediados de abril BFIS organizará un club de matemáticas para preparar a los alumnos para la competición de Middle, Junior and Senior Mathematics ISMTF(International Schools Mathematics Teachers Foundation). 3 miembros de High school y Middle School serán elegidos para representar al colegio en dicha competición. El club consistirá en una sesión extraescolar a la semana para practicar el razonamiento lógico y la resolución de problemas. Se ofrecerán once sesiones durante el primer semestre para todos los alumnos.
Se seleccionará a los alumnos que representarán a BFIS en estas competiciones al final del primer semestre. Los alumnos implicados en la competición senior tendrán cuatro sesiones adicionales, los de la junior tendrán tres sesiones adicionales, y los de la competición de MS, diez sesiones.
En el segundo semestre los padres recibirán más información sobre las sesiones del Club de matemáticas. Los detalles del viaje y la matrícula de la competición se anunciarán con la antelación adecuada. Los alumnos que representen a BFIS en estas competicione sdeberán tener un buen expediente académico.

An opportunity for students who have an interest in developing, exploring and having fun with forms of creative writing. The activity is facilitated by a published fiction writer who holds an MFA in creative writing from New York University, has taught on the collegiate level, and also is a working musician in Barcelona. The activity will allow students to explore various forms of narrative such as: fiction, non-fiction, poetry, screenplay, and even song writing. Students do not need to have previous experience, only an interest in expressing him or herself upon the blank page (as well any songwriters would be welcome to bring their instruments). What is done during the activity will depend largely upon the students and their particular interests. Students will be challenged during the activity to explore the tools of narrative such as setting, dialogue, conflict, plot, description, metaphor, satire as well as humor. Students will have an opportunity to share their work for peer critique, receive independent attention and feedback from the facilitator, and ideally find outlets to publish and perform what is created during the activity.

No hace falta tener experiencia previa, simplemente interés en expresarse ante un folio en blanco. Los que toquen algún instrumento pueden traerlo a clase. El ritmo y contenido de la clase dependerá mucho de los alumnos y de su interés. Animaré a los alumnos a descubrir las herramientas del proceso narrativo como contexto, diálogo, conflicto, argumento, descripción, metáfora, sátira y humor. The Film Club will view a variety of American and British independent films, including a few documentaries to generate stimulating discussion among, open them up challenging ideas, and ways of filming as well as giving foreign students the opportunity to practice and improve their English. In Debate club students will learn the basics of argumentation, different styles and forms of debate, and develop their oratorical skills. For 9th and 10th grade students the Debate club will provide the necessary experience for future participation in 11th/12th grade MUN trips to China. For current 11th/12th grade students who have no experience with MUN 1st semester participation in Debate club is required in order to participate in this year's MUN China trip. The Debate club will run activities during the 1st semester only and then during the second semester will become MUN club for those who are eligible to go to MUN Beijing. Students in the MUN club spend one day a week researching and debating the MUN topics and preparing for the trip. The MUN club is required for all students attending the trip and will stop after the trip to Beijing in mid-march.

El Club de debate ofrecerá actividades únicamente durante el primer semestre y se convertirá en MUN durante el segundo para aquellos que sean elegidos para el MUN de Beijing. Loa alumnos de MUN dedicarán un día a la semana a investigar y debatir sobre temas de MUN y a preparar el viaje. In this class we will reenact our favorite stories theatrically. We will look at these stories from different points of view and will create original new endings to these classic tales. We will also play improvisation games in which the students will be given characters or places or things and they will act accordingly on the spur of the moment. Songs will also be taught and the students will present them theatrically by acting out the lyrics.
The instructor, David Geiger, has worked as an actor and producer on stages in Minneapolis, Minnesota and San Francisco, California performing classics by Shakespeare and Dickens as well as modern and contemporary works. He has toured schools in California playing roles such as Ebinezer Scrooge, Friar Tuck, and Sherlock Holmes.

We will also be putting together a small Musical Review to be performed near the end of the semester. This activity will run only for the 1st semester and is great experience if students are interested in participating in the Drama Festival in March.

The Travel Club is offering a new travel experience this semester, for eight students in High School. We are planning a Food and Culture Trip to Florence Italy over a four-day weekend in December (yes, you will miss one day of school), to visit a traditional Florentine ceramics studio, take a market tour and maybe a cooking class. Oh yeah, and EAT! In order to make Travel Club more affordable, we have made some changes this year. Instead of meeting weekly to plan the trip all semester, we will meet only two or three times to prepare for the trip, and once afterwards to make a presentation about the experience for the BFIS Learning Series. Instead of paying for both the afterschool activity and the trip, you are really only paying for the trip. Also new this year, students interested in going on the trip will need to apply, as we are only able to take eight students. For more information, or to pick up an application, see Mr. Pitter or Ms. McDiarmid.
El Club de viajes ofrecerá una nueva experiencia este semestre para 8 alumnos de High School. Estamos planificando un viaje cultural y gastronómico a Florencia (Italia) durante 4 días a principios de diciembre (si, os perderéis un día de clase). En vez de reunirnos semanalmente para planificar el viaje durante todo el semestre, sólo nos juntaremos 2 o 3 veces para preparar el viaje y otra después para presentar la experiencia dentro de las BFIS Learning Series. Antes se pagaba por la actividad y por el viaje y ahora será sólo por el viaje. Otra novedad de este año es que todos los alumnos interesados deberán solicitarlo cuanto antes, ya que sólo podemos llevar a 8 alumnos. Wouldn't you like a place to complete your homework before you even leave school? BFIS is offering a free "Homework Club" for students in middle and high school. Join us on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:20 until 5:20 p.m. You don't have to let us know in advance. Just show up with your homework in Room 412 in the high school building.
¿No te gustaría disponer de un espacio para hacer la tarea antes de irte a casa? BFIS ofrece de forma un club de tarea para alumnos de Middle y High School. La actividad será los lunes, martes y jueves de 4:20 a 5:20 de la tarde. No tienes porqué avisar, simplemente tienes que venir con tu tarea al aula 412 del edificio de High School.

Swimming

This year BFIS will be able to offer swimming as an after school activity to students in Nursery, Pre-K and Kindergarten. Once a week, students will depart from BFIS at 3:15 and head to the nearby Can Caralleu facilities for swimming lessons. Between the time needed to arrive at Can Caralleu, change into bathing suits and have a 45-minute lesson, the after school activity will conclude at approximate 4.45. All parents will be expected to arrive at Can Caralleu by no later than 5:00 pm to pick up their children.
Please note that students who elect to enroll in swimming will be missing part of the academic day. Unfortunately, no local facilities have been able to offer us access to a swimming pool at a time that does not conflict with our normal schedule. Therefore, we have decided to continue our relationship with Can Caralleu for the coming year and will continue to explore other possibilities for the future. The cost is currently being calculated for swimming and will be added to the list soon.

Este curso BFIS ofrecerá clases de natación extraescolares para los alumnos de Nursery, Pre-K y Kindergarten. Una vez a la semana los alumnos saldrán del colegio a las 3.15 de la tarde hacia las instalaciones de Can Carelleu (muy cerca del colegio). Entre el tiempo que tardan en llegar a Can Carelleu, se cambian y tienen la clase de 45 minutos, la clase terminará a las 4.45 de la tarde paroximadamente. Todos los padres deberán ir a recoger a los niños antes de las 5.
Les recordamos que aquellos niños que se apunten a natación perderán parte de la última clase. Desafortunadamente, ningún centro local nos ha permitido usar las piscinas en horarios que no interfieran con las clases regulares. Por esta razón hemos decidido continuar con Can Carelleu este curso aunque continuaremos intentando buscar alternativas. Actualmente estamos calculando el coste de esta actividad y pronto les informaremos.

BFIS soccer teams will be open to students 6 yrs. (1st grade) to 16 yrs.
Practice will be two days a week from 16:15 – 17:30 hrs----Mon/Wed for 13 years old and up and Tu/Th for 6- 12 years. Games will be on Friday afternoons and occasionally Saturday mornings.
Practice will be held at the Maddock Sports facility: c/ Rafael Batllé, 21.
Participation Fee: 550 Euros for the entire season including sports clothing (training shirt, two pairs of shorts, two pairs of socks, 2 piece sweat suit and sport bag).
Payment can be made to Maddock Sports: c/Rafael Batllé, 26. Office hours Monday-Friday 10-14:00 hrs and 16-20:00 hrs.
Soccer classes will be in Spanish.

En los equipos de fútbol de BFIS podrán participar alumnos de entre 6 (grado 1) y 16 años.
Las prácticas se realizarán dos días a la semana de 16:15 a 17:30 horas. Lu/Mie para los de 13 años en adelante y Ma/Ju para los niños de 6 a 12 años. Los partidos serán lso viernes y ocasionalmente los sábados por la mañana.

Costes de participación: 550 Euros por toda la temporada incluyendo la equipación (camiseta, 2 pantalones cortos, 2 pares de calcetines. chándal de 2 piezas y bolso deportivo).

In the last weekend in March, BFIS will be presenting a Drama Festival - a series of one-act plays, including the Musical Passionella! Auditions will be held in November/December and rehearsals will begin in January. There will be opportunities for writers, actors, directors, and back-stage crew. If you're interested in any of these aspects of theater, keep an eye out for an information meeting in the near future or see Mr. Pitter or Ms. Hiltebrand and see what you can do to start getting ready now!
La última semana de marzo BFIS presentará su 1er Festival de Teatro- una serie de obras de un acto como el musical Passionella. Las audiciones serán en noviembre/diciembre y los ensayos comenzarán en enero. Habrá oportunidades para escritores, actores, directores y personal del back-stage.
