Welcome
from the
Admissions Coordinator

Dear Parents,
Welcome to our BFIS webpage!

While searching for a new school for your child, we know how important it is to get the right information.  We hope to be able to answer all of your questions as you learn about our school.

We invite you to explore the wonderful international and academic setting BFIS has to offer while you make the best choice of education in Barcelona for your child’s future.
In order to help you with the admissions process, we recommend   you go through the following steps:
1. Study and review our website carefully, specifically the area in which you are interested; Elementary, Middle or High School. Learn about BFIS philosophy, programs and activities.

2.  Schedule an appointment for an informative session followed by an on-site tour.

3. Once you have decided BFIS is your top choice, read, download and complete the
admissions application.  Gather all required documents (see page 3 of the of the application form) and send the packet to the Admissions Office. Once we receive the completed four-page application, you will be notified and   your child’s name will be put on a wait list.
This is the first step before we can consider a student as a prospective BFIS candidate.

Although sending the application does not guarantee admission, it is essential to complete this action as we process applications according to space availability and application entry date.
The Admissions Coordinator reviews and studies all applications individually, and special attention is given to each one.  If a space is available for your child, you will be scheduled for a student interview and internal assessment.
Again, thank you for your interest in Benjamin Franklin International School.  We hope to be of assistance to you during this process.  Do not hesitate to contact me at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it   should you have any additional questions.
Sincerely,
Alexandra Oriol
N-12 Admissions Coordinator

Admission to Kindergarten 1 (Nursery) and Kindergarten 2 (Pre-Kindergarten)

Students for the 3 year old and 4 year old programs must be socially and emotionally ready for the all day school program. December 31 is the standard cut-off date in allocating class placement to students who are starting their first year of schooling.

Placement of students

Students admitted to the school before December 31 will be placed in the grade level following the one that they had completed in their previous school system. If students are admitted after the school year has begun, they will be placed in the grade level, which they had been attending in their previous school system, even if this school year had been completed. Promotion to the next grade level at Benjamin Franklin will take place the following September.

Where there is a lack of clarity as to which is the correct grade level, then the student will be placed in the grade level, which is appropriate for the child's age. The Admissions Team will make the final decision in such cases.

Admission to Grade 6 and above

Students entering the school in Grades 6-12 must have the English language ability to cope successfully with all classes taught in English. There are ESL proficiencies that must be demonstrated for admission. Any student who enters Benjamin Franklin 4 weeks after the start of Grade 9 will not be eligible to receive the dual diploma certificate (both the American and Spanish High School Diplomas), unless they are moving from participation in a program in another school.

Students applying to enter Grade 11 after the start of the school year will only be accepted if they have been taking the proper diploma courses, or similar courses, which would enable them to transfer to the diploma program and desired grade at Benjamin Franklin.

Students may not enter Grade 12 unless they have previously been taking the American diploma course and we are able to offer subjects to enable them to successfully complete the diploma.

Language Testing

Language entrance tests at the start of year or after long holidays will take place the week prior to student admission. When possible, the admission will be earlier but only if numbers permit. The minimum amount of time between testing and starting school will be two days.

Family Support

All students are required to live with at least one parent while attending BFIS.
