Benjamin Franklin International School welcomes students who will benefit from the opportunities an international school such as ours offers in educating globally responsible citizens.
Entrance to our Middle and High School, grades 6 to 12, is selective and based on academic performance whereas entry to our Elementary School, Nursery to Grade 5, is open provided there is a good fit between the child and school. The typical Benjamin Franklin student, at all grade levels, achieves above-average percentile scores on United States norm evaluations and generally exceeds grade level in the classroom.
We accept a diverse population of students and recognize that some students have either linguistic and/or mathematical gifts and talents or learning needs or learn in a different way from the mainstream. Our small class sizes and learning support staff ensure that learners of all abilities receive the individual attention they need to thrive.
Students with limited or no English are admitted up to and including Grade 4 in the Elementary School. For admission in Grade 6 and above, students are expected to have functional use of the English language and each case receives individual treatment.
We give preference to applicants with:
- a sound record of academic achievement or in the case of younger students, evidence of academic promise
- the required skills, motivation and interest to succeed in our programs and
- parental commitment to create a strong learning partnership between home and school.
Priority is given to students with siblings already enrolled at BFIS. The applicant's nationality/ies will also be taken into account as a priority factor. In accordance with the school's admission policy, at each grade level 1/3 of the students are American, 1/3 Spanish/Catalan and 1/3 other nationalities.
The following factors are carefully considered in our admissions decisions:
- applicant's nationality/ies that maintain our cultural diversity of 1/3 American, 1/3 Spanish/Catalan, 1/3 international students per grade
- applicant's previous academic background, grades, test scores and recommendations
- applicant's previous behavioral record
- applicant's extra-curricular involvement
- sibling/s also applying or attending Benjamin Franklin
- English language ability and family language background
- English as a Second Language support needs, as well as availability in support programs up to Grade 7
- alumni status of parent/s
- willingness of parent/s to become contributing members of our school community
We reserve the right to request additional information before official admissions decisions are made. If any known special needs issues are not included on the application form, then the school reserves the right to withdraw our admissions offer. In addition, if any special needs are apparent after the child has been placed, then the school reserves the right to refuse acceptance and further placement.
