December 10th: A Celebration of Human Rights

Human rights. Harriet Tubman, Susan Anthony, Mahatma Ghandi, Martin Luther King. Struggles as long as history. Those who believed beyond all hope in the inalienable privileges of all people, regardless of culture, language, class, and race. In a way, these are some of the essential understandings, that we too are grappling with here at school, from Philosophy 1 to 5th grade inquiries into Mesopotamia. These are the ways that we meaningfully connect teaching and learning to the world: the task of developing good human beings and responsible social citizens.

As a school that embodies the values of international education: broadmindedness, multiple perspectives, and multilingualism, our role is not to change the world; rather, it is to create the conditions so that intellectual vigor, curiosity, and critical engagement with the world, can flourish. For that reason, on December 10th, along with thousands of others around the world, BFIS will be celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
 
The anniversary of the Declaration  is not only a tribute to the ideals of the United Nations, but also to the centrality of education  and the role that schools can play in the support of human development and dignity. As the Christmas season approaches, we feel it is fitting to assist children in making the connections between the holidays and the significance of this historical milestone. The values BFIS upholds: personal responsibility, cooperation, imaginative thinking, problem-solving, decision making, care and respect, reflect the essence of the Declaration and its insistence on a more humane world, that recognizes the rights and  fundamental privileges of all human beings.

We are committed to the  Declaration of Human Rights goals to create not only academically strong graduates, but also citizens who promote respect for others and the environment we share, insist upon justice, and act with compassion.

December 10th will be a day to showcase, celebrate, perform and display our students´understanding of and homage to the rights of all citizens. It will combine the results of active inquiries along with the spirit of the holiday season: a time of gratitude, peace, family and generosity. It will mark a moment for identifying BFIS and the role it is playing as a place where culture, inquiry and service thrive on behalf of the common good.
 
Consider the words of Emma Goldman, as they echo our own historical mission and commitment: "No one has yet fully realized the wealth of sympathy, kindness and generosity hidden in the soul of a child. The effort of every true education should be to unlock that treasure."
 
Join our community on December 10th, for a day of song and presentations, in tribute to human worth and to the season of peace on earth.  

10 de diciembre: Celebración de los Derechos humanos

Derechos humanos. Harriet Tubman, Susan Anthony, Mahatma Ghandi, Martin Luther King. Luchas tan largas como la misma historia. Aquellos que creyeron por encima de todo en los derechos fundamentales de todas las personas, independientemente de su cultura, lengua, clase social o raza. En cierto sentido, estas son algunas de los temas esenciales que también planteamos aquí en el colegio, desde grado 5 y sus cuestiones sobre Mesopotamia hasta la clase de Filosofía I. Esta es una de las formas que usamos para dar significado a la conexión de enseñanza y aprendizaje con el mundo: la tarea de que los alumnos lleguen a ser buenas personas y ciudadanos responsables.

Como colegio que representa los valores de la educación internacional (esto es, tener un punto de vista abierto, aceptar múltiples perspectivas y el plurilingüismo), nuestra tarea no consiste en cambiar el mundo, sino más bien en generar las condiciones óptimas para que se desarrollen la fuerza intelectual, la curiosidad, y el pensamiento crítico. Por esta razón, el próximo 10 de diciembre, BFIS celebrará, junto con muchos otros en todo el mundo, el 60º aniversario de la Declaración Universal de los Derechos Humanos. 
 
El Aniversario de la Declaración no es simplemente un homenaje a los ideales de las Naciones Unidas, sino también a la centralidad de la educación y al papel que los colegios pueden desempeñar en el apoyo a la dignidad y al desarrollo humanos. Ahora que nos acercamos a la estación navideña, creemos que es un momento acertado para mostrar la conexión entre este período navideño y el significado de un gran hito histórico. Los valores que BFIS mantiene (la responsabilidad personal, la cooperación, la dignidad, la imaginación, la resolución de conflictos, la toma de decisiones, el cuidado y el respeto), reflejan la esencia de la Declaración y su insistencia en crear un mundo más humano, que reconozca los derechos fundamentales de todo ser humano.

Estamos comprometidos con los objetivos de la Declaración de los Derechos Humanos de conseguir que nuestros alumnos sean no sólo fuertes en el aspecto académico, sino que también fomenten el respeto hacia los demás y hacia el entorno, que sean justos, y que actúen con compasión.

El 10 de diciembre será un día en el que los alumnos podrán mostrar, celebrar, representar y enseñar su comprensión de los derechos de todos los ciudadanos. Combinará  los resultados de cuestiones activas con el espíritu de esta época del año, el período idóneo para expresar gratitud, paz, familia y generosidad. Será un evento que servirá para reafirmar la identidad de BFIS y el papel que está llevando a cabo como centro de cultura, investigación y servicio a los demás en la lucha por un bien común.
 
En palabras de Emma Goldman que reflejan nuestra misión y compromiso: “Nadie se ha dado totalmente cuenta de la riqueza que se esconde en la simpatía, la amabilidad y la generosidad del alma de un niño. El esfuerzo de todo educador debería ser el descubrir ese tesoro”.
