Over these last few weeks of vacation, I have been thinking about our recent human rights celebration. First, the miracle that it happened, despite the weather. But more importantly that those rights: to free expression, to work, to shelter, to dissent, to inquire, to pursue happiness, that these very liberties are basic to what we want for our own children. And that each of these, to be truly attained and valued, are arduous tasks that last a lifetime of learning how to use ones freedom well. Is this not what the process of education is essentially about: inspiring and guiding the young to learn how to use their freedom well?

As Head of School you live in the multiple dimensions: preening your neck towards the future and keeping your eyes grounded on the details of the present. There are the bathrooms that are not clean, the photocopy machine that has broken again, random acts of vandalism, missing keys, outbreaks of lice and too much litter on the campus. While there is the future to consider: new staff positions, an annual drive, new facilities for a school that is already maximized, and the uncertainty of a precarious global economy. But all of this balances out into a state of promise and satisfaction when I think about what has transpired these last 5 months:

 A Youth Assembly
 the human rights exhibits
 the Holiday performances
 the musical cabaret
 the Food Drive
 the Cap program
 the Medieval Festival
 the 10th grade memorial
 the Student Produced Pod cast... And what is ahead:
 student exchanges
 a Literary Magazine
 artists in Residence
 New Century Learning….
and I am buoyed by the realities of young people learning how to inquire, to produce things, to problem solve, to question, to collaborate, to give to others, to create. In short, to using their freedom well.

It is the last day of the year. I wish every member of this richly diverse and vibrant community a year of peace, of joy, and of meaning. And for all 440 of you with your baggy pants, your piercings, your headphones, your ipods, your overstuffed backpacks, your smiles and eyes full of wonder, your multiple languages and experiences, your youthfulness and vitality  I, like every adult here at BFIS, wants each one of you, over time---to learn how to use your freedom well.
It is the most precious gift we have.

Durante las últimas semanas de vacaciones, he estado pensando sobre nuestra reciente celebración de los derechos humanos. Lo primero, que fue un milagro que al final sucediese, a pesar del tiempo. Pero, más importante, que esos derechos, el derecho a la libertad de expresión, al trabajo, a la vivienda, al desacuerdo, a preguntar, a perseguir la felicidad; estas libertades son básicas dentro de lo que queremos para nuestros niños. Y que, alcanzar y valorar cada una de ellas, exige una tarea ardua que lleva toda una vida de aprendizaje sobre cómo hacer un buen uso de las libertades de uno. ¿No es en el fondo de lo que esencialmente trata el proceso de la educación: inspirar y guiar a los jóvenes para que usen su libertad bien?

Como Director tienes que estar atento a múltiples perspectivas: debes asomarte al futuro a la vez que mantienes los ojos en los detalles del presente. Entre estos últimos, baños que no están limpios, la fotocopiadora se vuelve a estropear, actos de vandalismo esporádicos, se pierden llaves, brotes de piojos y demasiada basura en el campus. A la vez, hay detalles del futuro que considerar: nuevos profesores, una campaña anual, nuevas instalaciones para un colegio que no da más de sí y la incertidumbre de una economía global precaria. Sin embargo, todo esto se traduce en un estado satisfactorio y prometedor cuando pienso en todo lo ocurrido en estos últimos 5 meses:

 Una Asamblea Juvenil
 Las exhibiciones de los derechos humanos
 La celebración navideña
 El cabaret musical
 La recolecta anual de alimentos
 El programa CAP
 El festival medieval
 El memorial de grado 10
 El podcast producido por los alumnos... Y lo que nos espera:
 Intercambio de alumnos
 Una revista literaria
 Artistas en residencia
 Programa Aprender en un Nuevo Siglo….

Y me siento animado por la realidad de ver a jóvenes aprendiendo a preguntarse, a producir cosas, a solucionar problemas, a cuestionar, a colaborar, a ofrecer a los demás, a crear. Resumiendo: a usar bien su libertad.

Es el último día del año, y me gustaría desear a cada miembro de esta diversa y vibrante comunidad un año de paz, felicidad y significado. Y yo, como cualquier adulto aquí en BFIS, os deseo a los 440 de vosotros, con vuestros pantalones anchos, vuestros piercings, auriculares, ipods, vuestras mochilas cargadas, vuestras sonrisas y miradas de asombro, vuestros idiomas y vuestra experiencia, vuestra juventud y vitalidad que, con el tiempo, aprendáis a usar bien vuestra libertad.
