T In the time since it’s founding in 1969, the Diploma Programme has become a leading, internationally recognized pre-university qualification, a symbol of academic excellence. Students who complete the programme have successfully demonstrated a strong commitment to learning, and have generally been encouraged to appreciate the value of human diversity. According to the IBO publication “The Diploma Programme – A Basis for Practice”, there are four fundamental aims of the Programme:
Most Colleges and Universities find these qualities appealing and hence, IB Diploma students will find themselves in a good position when applying to institutions of further education worldwide. Features of the IB DiplomaT All IB Diploma candidates are required to complete one subject from each of the groups. At least three and not more than four of the six subjects are taken at Higher Level, the others at Standard Level. The Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL) programs are constructed to occupy two academic years although with some SL courses it is possible to teach them in one. At the end of the first year of the Diploma Programme, there is the option of taking examinations in not more than two SL subjects. Many Diploma candidates however, choose to take all examinations in a single session at the end of the two-year period of preparation. Students not wishing to enroll in the full IB Diploma Programme can still access the IB classes by completing certificates in the subjects of their choice.
Implementation of the IB Diploma at BFIS Implementation of the IB Diploma programme will follow several phases leading to the first classes being taught in September 2011 and the first examinations taking place in May 2013 (although if we do end up offering some one year IB options, a small number of students might sit their first exams in May 2012). The last AP exams would take place in May 2012 as we would then phase out that program. Over the next two and a half years, the teachers at BFIS will be preparing themselves to be able to offer a world class programme from the get go. They will be receiving training, general and subject specific and they will be working on creating new teaching plans and assessments. At the same time they will also be modifying our Grade 9 & 10 curriculum in order that our students have the skills necessary to enter the IB Diploma Programme if they choose to challenge themselves. We will also be holding several informational sessions for parents and students. All our students will be enrolled in some IB classes and complete some IB Certificates. However, it is our aim to have as many students as possible enroll in the full Diploma which is the most beneficial educationally and in terms of university acceptance. Some students might still wish to take the Selectividad exams and this will still be possible in combination with some IB Certificates. At BFIS we could most likely offer: Group 1: A1 Spanish A1 English
Group 2: A2 Spanish A2 English French B Spanish B
Group 3: History Another social science (e.g. philosophy and/or economics)
Group 4: Biology Chemistry Physics
Group 5: Math Studies Math SL Math HL
Group 6: Art Plus Theory of Knowledge ** Please note that this is only a preliminary list and will most likely change as we move towards implementation in two and a half years time, for example we might be able to offer Catalan A1 Why do the IB? During that time he has taught in three different IB schools, in Mexico, China and Brazil. He has taught IB Biology, IB Chemistry and Theory of Knowledge as well as being an IB Biology examiner and moderator. He has been the IB Coordinator in two different schools (in one he completed the implementation process) and even spent a one year stint as CAS Coordinator. E de International Baccalaureate en BFIS El Programa del Diploma de International Baccalaureate es un plan de estudios exhaustivo y exigente que se completa en dos años, y que conduce a exámenes de reconocimiento internacional. Permite a los alumnos cumplir con los requisitos de muchos sistemas de educación nacionales o estatales. El Programa del Diploma incorpora los mejores elementos de los sistemas nacionales, sin estar basado en ninguno particular. Desde su fundación en 1969, el Programa del Diploma IB se ha convertido en un título pre-universitario destacado e internacionalmente reconocido, un símbolo de excelencia educativa. Los alumnos que siguen este programa han demostrado un sólido compromiso con el aprendizaje, y generalmente se les ha animado a valorar la diversidad. De acuerdo con la publicación IBO, “The Diploma Programme – A Basis for Practice”, el Programa tiene cuatro objetivos fundamentales:
La mayor parte de las universidades y escuelas superiores encuentran interesantes estas cualidades, y por consiguiente, los alumnos del Diploma IB estarán en una buena posición a la hora de solicitar admisión en instituciones de ecuación superior de todo el mundo. Características del Diploma IBE Todos los candidatos al Diploma IB deben completar una asignatura de cada uno de los grupos. Al menos 3 y no más de 4 de las seis asignaturas se realizan a un nivel alto (Higher Level), y las otras a un nivel estándar (Standard Level). Los programas Higher Level (HL) y Standard Level (SL) están estructurados para ocupar dos cursos académicos, aunque es posible realizar algunos cursos de SL en un año. Al final del primer año del Programa del Diploma, hay opción de realizar exámenes de cómo máximo 2 asignaturas SL. Muchos candidatos al Diploma, sin embargo, eligen realizar los exámenes en una única sesión al final del período de preparación de dos años. Los alumnos que no deseen obtener el Programa del Diploma IB completo, pueden acceder a las clases de IB completando certificados en las asignaturas que elijan.
Implementación del Diploma IB en BFIS La implementación del programa del Diploma IB se hará en varias fases. Las primeras clases serán en septiembre de 2011, y por lo tanto los primeros exámenes en mayo de 2013 (aunque si al final ofrecemos alguna opción de IB de un año, un pequeño grupo de alumnos podría realizar sus primeros exámenes en mayo de 2012). En los próximos dos años y medio, los profesores de BFIS se prepararán para poder ofrecer un programa de primera clase desde el principio. Recibirán formación, tanto general como específica de su asignatura, y trabajarán en nuevos planes de enseñaza y sistemas de evaluación. Al mismo tiempo, modificarán nuestro plan de estudios de los grados 9 y 10 para que los alumnos estén preparados para acceder al Programa del Diploma IB si deciden elegirlo. También ofreceremos varias sesiones informativas para padres y alumnos. Todos nuestros alumnos estarán matriculados en alguna clase de IB y completarán algún certificado de IB. Sin embargo, nuestro objetivo es tener el mayor número posible de alumnos matriculados en el Diploma completo, ya que es el más beneficioso en cuanto a educación y en términos de acceso a la universidad. Algunos estudiantes podrían seguir queriendo prepararse para los exámenes de Selectividad, y esto será posible en combinación con alguno de los certificados de IB.

¿Por qué IB? Joe Santos Mr Santos ha estado involucrado en el Programa de International Baccalaureate durante toda su trayectoria dentro de la enseñanza internacional, que ya suma 13 años. Durante este tiempo, ha trabajado en tres colegios diferentes de IB en Méjico, China y Brasil. Ha impartido clases de IB Biología, IB Química y Teoría del Conocimiento, además de haber sido examinador y moderador de IB Biología. Ha sido Coordinador de IB en dos colegios diferentes (en uno de ellos terminó el proceso de implementación) e incluso se encargó de la coordinación de CAS durante un año.
