Our School
Benjamin Franklin International School
In 1985, a dream was born—a vision of a school that would foster academic excellence, individual growth, and a sense of community in a multicultural setting. What started as a small group of passionate parents, educators, and hopeful students has since blossomed into a vibrant educational institution dedicated to shaping the minds and hearts of future generations. Join us as we look back at our journey, from a humble beginning to the thriving future-facing learning environment we are today.
A group of ten Barcelona families, deeply passionate about education, recognized a void: the ideal school for their children simply didn't exist. United by this realization, they pooled their thoughts, and from their shared vision, the idea of founding a new school began to take shape.
In September 1986, the Benjamin Franklin International School opened its doors with 23 teachers and 150 students, from PK to 12th grade.
As the student body expanded to 234, the Foundation Board recognized the need for larger facilities. This growth prompted them to actively begin searching for a new, more spacious location to accommodate the increasing number of students.
BFIS expanded its facilities with the construction of long-term Elementary and Middle School modules. This development signified the school's commitment to providing enhanced learning environments and accommodating its growing student body.
Our school proudly introduced the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) in 2011, marking a significant milestone in our commitment to academic excellence and holistic education. This addition underscored our dedication to providing students with a globally recognized, rigorous, and well-rounded educational experience.
The first purpose-built building on our campus was the Elementary School, which was inaugurated in 2016. This facility was specifically designed to cater to the unique needs of young learners, providing an optimal environment for their early educational journey.
BFIS reached its maximum capacity with 700 students, a clear reflection of the school's growing reputation and the high demand for its quality international education. This significant milestone underscores the strength and vibrancy of our diverse learning community.
The second purpose-built building on campus, dedicated to the Secondary School, was inaugurated in 2021. This facility provides state-of-the-art resources, designed to support advanced learning and foster student development. The expansion marked a significant new chapter in enhancing the educational experience at BFIS.
The IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) was introduced to offer a cohesive and challenging curriculum for students in Grades 6–10, specifically designed to prepare them for the rigorous IBDP. Its implementation significantly strengthened our commitment to inquiry-based, globally-focused education.
BFIS underwent a rebranding initiative, launching a new visual identity that reflects the school's evolution and forward-looking vision. This refreshed look embodies our dynamic community and strong commitment to innovation in education.
In 2026, BFIS will proudly inaugurate the New Center for Creativity and Innovation. This purpose-built space is designed to foster collaboration, cultivate design thinking, and provide dynamic opportunities for hands-on learning, further enhancing the educational experience at BFIS.
Why
Benjamin Franklin?
Benjamin Franklin, a Founding Father of the United States, was truly ahead of his time, often earning him the moniker "the wisest American." His remarkable life encompassed roles as a statesman, diplomat, scientist, inventor, writer, philosopher, publisher, and the first U.S. Ambassador to France. He was also a beloved civil servant. Franklin's embodiment of curiosity, innovation, and global thinking continues to resonate strongly with the BFIS community today.
BFIS &
George Orwell
In 1937, during the Spanish Civil War, George Orwell recuperated in what was then the Sanatorio Maurin hospital after being shot in the throat. This very building is now known as the Orwell Building here at BFIS, giving us a unique historical connection to the renowned English author.
To honor this significant link, the Orwell Society visits the school every two years, touring the Orwell Building. They are typically accompanied by Richard Blair, Orwell's son, who also delivers a talk in the school library. His presentations delve into his father's experiences during the Spanish Civil War and how those pivotal moments shaped his life and literary work. During their last visit, Mr. Blair also kindly presented awards to students who participated in the First Orwell Dystopian Short Story Competition, recognizing their remarkable creativity and literary skills.
