Child Protection

Protecting the children in our care is a priority on a daily basis at BFIS. When you come onto our campus you will see photos of our child safeguarding team and we have strict protocols and child protection safeguards built in our work that follow the international standards of the Council of International Schools and the International Task Force for Child Protection. In addition to our efforts to educate and empower our students, we conduct regular risk assessments for safe and vulnerable spaces or practices, ongoing reviews of our policies and procedures, an a system for reporting and investigating any incidents or concerns.

Staff Training

At BFIS we conduct all onboarding and ongoing child protection training for teachers, operational staff, substitute teachers, coaches and monitors supervising buses, after-school and summer programs. All staff members on our campus undergo regularly scheduled refresher training on our child protection and safeguarding practices to ensure that they are up-to-date and knowledgeable about the ways that we safeguard our children.

Students Education

We conduct developmentally appropriate research-based lessons and discussions with students on safe touch and body ownership as part of our curriculum. As students get older we educate them about how to keep themselves safe and what to do if they have any concerns. As part of our curriculum, we teach our students about personal safety, including how to recognize and respond to uncomfortable and potentially dangerous situations, as well as how to report any concerns they may have.

Somos una comunidad de aprendizaje que fomenta el crecimiento personal de los estudiantes y su capacidad de colaboración en un entorno escolar donde pueden ser creativos, aprender de sus fracasos, perseguir sus aspiraciones y contribuir positivamente a la sociedad. La Fundación estará exenta de todo fin lucrativo y será una entidad abierta a nivel internacional, sin limitación de ningún tipo por razones de ideología y perseguirá el perfeccionamiento humano y social y la convivencia personal basada en el desarrollo de la cultura y del conocimiento norteamericano. Será fin primordial de la Fundación, la satisfacción de las necesidades físicas e intelectuales en su más amplio sentido, dedicando especial atención a la educación basada en la cultura y enseñanza de los Estados Unidos de Norteamérica.

Non-profit purpose

The Foundation will be exempt from any lucrative purpose and will be an entity open at an international level, without limitations of any kind for reasons of ideology, and will pursue human and social improvement and personal coexistence based on the development of North American culture and knowledge. The primary purpose of the Foundation will be the satisfaction of physical and intellectual needs in its broadest sense, dedicating special attention to education based on the culture and teaching of the United States of America.

Memoria de Actividades /Annual Review

La fundación ofrece a través de BFIS un programa educativo americano desde Educación Infantil hasta el 10º curso (correspondiente a 4º de la ESO) siguiendo los estándares americanos propios y ofrece el programa de Diploma de Bachillerato Internacional durante los dos últimos cursos (11º y 12º, correspondientes a 1º y 2º de Bachillerato), implementando las mejores prácticas a escala internacional.. Adicionalmente se ofrece la convalidación con el programa educativo español con la impartición de las asignaturas de Lengua Catalana, Lengua Castellana y Geografía e Historia, tanto en la ESO como en Bachillerato. El plan de estudios del colegio es un plan de estudios propio del siglo XXI que ofrece oportunidades de aprendizaje y desarrollo a los alumnos para convertirse en individuos bien formados tanto en el aspecto académico como en el humano que contribuyen de manera positiva a una sociedad y a un mundo en constante cambio.

The Foundation offers through BFIS an American educational program from Early Childhood Education to the 10th grade (corresponding to 4th grade of ESO) following its own American standards and offers the International Baccalaureate Diploma program during the last two grades (11th and 12th, corresponding to 1st and 2nd year of Spanish Bachillerato), implementing the best practices on an international scale. Additionally, validation with the Spanish educational program is offered with the teaching of the subjects of Catalan Language, Spanish Language and Geography and History, both in ESO and in High School. The school's curriculum is a 21st-century curriculum that offers learning and development opportunities for students to become well-educated individuals, both academically and humanly, who contribute positively to society and to a constantly changing world.

Junta de la Fundación (BFIS Foundation Board)

La Fundación Benjamín Franklin fue creada en 1986, al amparo de la Ley de Fundaciones española, como fundación educativa sin ánimo de lucro. La Junta de la Fundación es responsable del gobierno del colegio Benjamin Franklin International School, incluida su supervisión fiduciaria, la política y la planificación estratégica a largo plazo necesaria para garantizar el éxito continuo de la escuela.

El estatuto corporativo y los estatutos de la Fundación proporcionan el marco operativo que garantiza que el carácter y la misión de nuestra escuela permanezcan protegidos y perpetuados. Nuestros estatutos están inscritos en el Protectorado y Registro de Fundaciones de Catalunya y están disponibles previa solicitud. La Junta incluye hasta diez miembros voluntarios elegidos para crear una combinación y equilibrio de antecedentes, habilidades y perspectivas.

El mix de competencias que se busca en la Junta en cada momento se basa en los objetivos estratégicos marcados por la Fundación. Cada miembro puede cumplir un mandato de 3 años, con un máximo de 3 mandatos consecutivos. La Junta de la Fundación sigue un modelo de gobierno que se perpetúa a sí mismo, reconocido como la mejor práctica para las escuelas independientes por el Consejo Europeo de Escuelas Independientes (ECIS) y la Asociación Nacional de Escuelas Independientes (NAIS). Es el modelo de gobierno en más del 90% de las escuelas independientes sin fines de lucro de EE. UU. Nuestros estatutos exigen que siete de los diez miembros de la Junta sean ciudadanos estadounidenses, incluido el Presidente de la Junta de la Fundación. El proceso de reclutamiento de voluntarios para ser miembro de la Junta está en curso. Siempre se ha pensado que tener una perspectiva de los padres es muy importante, por lo que los fideicomisarios se seleccionan principalmente de nuestra comunidad de progenitores. Una de las formas de comenzar a participar en el proceso es ofreciéndose como voluntario en los comités:

Comité de instalaciones:

Este comité desarrolla el plan maestro para los edificios y terrenos de la escuela con el personal de la escuela y consultores externos para la aprobación de la Junta. También puede monitorear la implementación de los planes de las instalaciones. Informa a la Junta periódicamente sobre los principales problemas de la planta y el campus y mantiene informado al Comité de Finanzas sobre las necesidades de edificios y terrenos. A veces, el comité brinda una amplia supervisión de los principales proyectos de construcción, pero no actúa como administrador del proyecto. El comité no se involucra en las operaciones del día a día, pero está atento a las necesidades de mantenimiento diferido de las instalaciones. Comité de finanzas:

Este comité está involucrado con las siguientes funciones: Finanzas: en conjunto con el director de la escuela y el director de finanzas y operaciones (DFO), este comité desarrolla planes financieros a largo plazo y los presupuestos anuales de la escuela, incluido el establecimiento de niveles para las cuotas escolares, para la aprobación de la Junta. Supervisa la implementación del presupuesto, presenta informes periódicos a la Junta sobre el estado financiero de la escuela y educa a la Junta sobre las tendencias que afectan las finanzas de la escuela. La membresía puede incluir expertos externos en finanzas y planificación financiera. Inversiones: El comité desarrolla y recomienda a la Junta políticas que delinean cómo la escuela invertirá sus recursos financieros; establece y supervisa los objetivos de inversión. Comité de gobernanza:

El Comité de Gobernanza supervisa todos los asuntos relacionados con la organización y el funcionamiento de la Junta de la Fundación, incluida la selección de los miembros de la Junta y el Comité de la Junta. Vela por que la Fundación cumpla, en todo momento, con la legislación vigente y siga las mejores prácticas en materia de gobierno escolar independiente.

Foundation Board (BFIS Foundation Board)

The Benjamín Franklin Foundation was created in 1986, under the Spanish Foundations Law, as a non-profit educational foundation. The Foundation Board is responsible for the governance of Benjamin Franklin International School, including its fiduciary oversight, policy, and long-term strategic planning necessary to ensure the continued success of the school.

The corporate charter and Foundation bylaws provide the operational framework that ensures that the character and mission of our school remain protected and perpetuated. Our statutes are registered in the Protectorate and Registry of Foundations of Catalonia and are available upon request. The Board includes up to ten volunteer members chosen to create a mix and balance of backgrounds, skills, and perspectives.

The mix of competencies sought in the Board at all times is based on the strategic objectives set by the Foundation. Each member can serve a term of 3 years, with a maximum of 3 consecutive terms. The Foundation Board follows a self-perpetuating governance model, recognized as best practice for independent schools by the European Council of Independent Schools (ECIS) and the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS). It is the governance model at more than 90% of U.S. nonprofit independent schools. Our bylaws require that seven of the ten Board members be U.S. citizens, including the Foundation Board Chair. The recruitment process for volunteers to become a member of the Board is ongoing. Having a parental perspective has always been thought to be very important, so trustees are primarily selected from our parenting community. One of the ways to begin participating in the process is by volunteering on committees:

Facilities Committee:

This committee develops the master plan for the school buildings and grounds with school staff and outside consultants for Board approval. May also monitor the implementation of facility plans. Reports to the Board periodically on major plant and campus issues and keeps the Finance Committee informed of building and land needs. The committee sometimes provides extensive oversight of major construction projects but does not act as project manager. The committee is not involved in day-to-day operations but is attentive to the deferred maintenance needs of the facilities. Its members may include parents, other people with experience in construction and related fields, and students.

Finance committee:

This committee is involved with the following functions: Finance: In conjunction with the Head of School and the director of finance and operations (DFO), this committee develops long-term financial plans and annual budgets for the school, including establishing levels for school fees for Board approval. Monitors budget implementation, submits periodic reports to the Board on the financial status of the school and educates the Board on trends affecting the school's finances. Membership may include external experts in finance and financial planning. Investments: The committee develops and recommends to the Board policies that outline how the school will invest its financial resources; and establishes and monitors investment objectives. Annual Audit: The finance committee ensures that an independent auditor conducts an internal audit each year, for review and approval by the Board. This is a requirement of the local Protectorate (the body that supervises Foundations in Catalonia).

Governance committee:

The Governance Committee oversees all matters related to the organization and operation of the Foundation Board, including the selection of members of the Board and the Board Committee. Ensures that the Foundation complies, at all times, with current legislation and follows best practices in independent school governance.

Beneficiarios/Beneficiaries

Los beneficiarios de la Fundación serán la Benjamin Franklin International School así como aquellas otras instituciones, organizaciones y personas que, a criterio del Patronato, persigan fines educacionales similares. Los beneficiarios se determinarán de conformidad con los principios de igualdad, objetividad y no discriminación. Asimismo, el Patronato destinará parte de sus beneficios a los estudiantes hijos de los empleados de estas instituciones (profesores, empleados, etc.) de acuerdo con el Convenio de Enseñanza y la política interna de la Fundación.

The beneficiaries of the Foundation will be the Benjamin Franklin International School as well as those other institutions, organizations, and individuals that, at the discretion of the Board of Trustees, pursue similar educational purposes. The beneficiaries will be determined by the principles of equality, objectivity, and non-discrimination. Likewise, the Board of Trustees will allocate part of its benefits to students who are children of employees of these institutions (teachers, employees, etc.) through the Teaching Agreement and the internal policy of the Foundation.
