After working in Public Relations and Marketing in New York City, Laura pursued her Masters degree at New York University where she graduated with an MA in Foreign Language Education (Spanish and English) with certification in grades K-12.  Her teaching career began in New York City, teaching Spanish as an additional language (SAL) in the public school system. When she moved to Barcelona in 2007, she earned a second Masters degree at the University of Barcelona in The Teaching of Language and Literature while she taught English as an additional language at an international school in Sant Cugat.  She started her doctorate studies at the UB researching the multilingual aspects of teachers´ lives and the impact that language transfer has on their teaching styles and philosophies. Laura put her investigation on hold after having her first child and hopes to one day finish her doctoral thesis.  She began working at BFIS in 2011 where Laura has taught SAL in grades 6-10, IB Spanish B in grades 11-12 and will serve as IB Coordinator starting in September 2019.

Laura has held a passion for Spanish language and culture since she was very young and has experienced various study abroad programs to several different Spanish speaking countries. She finds joy in watching her students become passionate about language.  Laura believes that by enjoying the process of learning a new language, students will identify with and truly appreciate the target culture. Her hope is to simply plant the seed in her students that will lead to a life-long love for language learning.

I am British, but I have lived in a few places before arriving at BFIS. I have studied Biology and taught English in Dresden, Germany and worked as a Biologist for an Austrian company in Salzburg. During my teaching career I have taught in Manchester (UK), Costa Rica and Spain. I moved to Barcelona from Cadiz in January 2011, after five years there.

I am passionate about science, especially evolution, ecology, and zoology. I also love music and playing music. Sometime I even get to combine science and music, which is great fun. I like to incorporate my love for the outdoors and nature into my lessons wherever possible.

I have been teaching at BFIS for most of my professional career. I am a BFIS teacher since 2000. I have been a Lead Teacher in 3rd and 4th Grade, as well as a Spanish and Catalan Language Teacher. Since 2017 I wear two hats: Elementary Math Coach and EAL teacher for Grades 2-3, which allows me to combine math and language. I love seeing kids make connections and develop their understanding in both areas.

A licensed Speech Language Pathologist, my experience ranges from my native Sydney, Australia to the beautiful Mediterranean city of Barcelona which I have called home for 20 plus years. I'm a mother and love swimming and stand up paddling in the sea, and cycling and running in the hills.

Early graduate experience took place in Australia serving individuals with severe developmental disabilities. Love of language and travel saw me complete a degree in Language Arts with a Spanish language major involving studies abroad to Costa Rica and - you guessed it - Barcelona.  I am equally at ease in English, Spanish or Catalan.  I am enthusiastic about language acquisition and learning support at BFIS, where I coordinate Student Support Services in the Elementary School team. Supporting individuals, their families, and educators, I am proud to be part of this community.

Jenny joined the BFIS community in 2018 in a new role as the Instructional Technology Coach.  With her she brings twelve years of teaching experience in elementary and middle school classrooms in California.  Integrating educational technology tools into her own classroom, early in her career, provided Jenny with a window into a world that was just starting to be explored.  Along with serving as a teacher leader in technology integration, in her most recent role Jenny coached her previous school district through a 1:1 deployment, designed digital citizenship units, and trained staff on the shift to a 21st century classroom.  Jenny’s philosophy of technology in the hands of students is simple; creation over consumption. She believes that when we shift our experience and interaction with technology to one of creation, exploration, design, iteration, communication, and collaboration, a whole world of opportunity awaits.

Raised in Chicago by an American father and Catalan mother, I grew up spending vacations in Barcelona. After studying International Affairs in Washington DC, I worked for several years in a consulting firm specializing in international development. Since then I have lived in Athens, Tokyo, and Riga, raising two small children and working on international projects focusing on education. Ideally, I spend my free time on road trips exploring new places and enjoying the outdoors, reading novels, or doing complex jigsaw puzzles into the wee hours of the night.
