At BFIS, we believe in experiential learning that cultivates curiosity, responsibility, and self-reliance through real-world, hands-on experiences. Students embark on new learning adventures in authentic settings, building grit and a strong sense of community. These meaningful, purpose-driven experiences are woven into all grade levels, subjects, and service projects.
Outdoor Learning and Forest School
From Forest School with our youngest learners in Early Childhood and Elementary, to developing outdoor learning experiences in Middle and High School, we're increasingly focused on the incredible opportunities nature provides. Students discover what they can learn and achieve when surrounded by the natural world, empowering them to become change agents by fostering empathy, adventure, and social responsibility.
Through teamwork and "fail-forward" experiences, we strive to build students' self-esteem and confidence. They learn to find collaborative solutions to challenges they face personally, locally, and globally. Our Outdoor Learning programs deeply solidifies students' connection with themselves, with others, and with the world around them.
Maker-Centered Learning
Students thrive when they engage in hands-on, real-world learning - solving problems, creating solutions, and bringing ideas to life. This dynamic approach transforms them into innovative thinkers, creators and designers while celebrating diverse perspectives and ways of understanding.
Citizenship and Action
Beyond preparing students for college and future careers, we strive to cultivate experiences that transform young people into social entrepreneurs, community leaders and innovators. We nurture a spirit of empathy rooted in social responsibility, empowering students to truly believe they can make the world a better place through opportunities for service and action both locally and globally.
Real-World Learning and Internships
In High School, students have incredible opportunities to work alongside professionals like research scientists, aerospace engineers, and technology entrepreneurs. Through one and two-week internship experiences, students get a unique "behind the curtain" look at their chosen professions, often by visiting their actual workplaces within our community.
From Elementary through Middle School, we're dedicated to creating opportunities that allow students to explore the world of work and higher education firsthand. We're actively building partnerships that offer even our youngest students a valuable glimpse into future career possibilities.
