MYP Grades 9 and 10

At BFIS, the High School curriculum for Grades 9 and 10 blends the American educational framework with the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Program (MYP).

The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program is a five-year program  (Grades 6-10) that seeks to cultivate well-rounded students with both broad and deep knowledge—individuals who thrive in all aspects of their development: physical, intellectual, emotional, and ethical.

The MYP curriculum framework comprises eight subject groups, providing a broad and balanced education for early adolescents. Students also complete a personal project, which is an independent piece of work that may be an essay, an artistic production or another form of expression.

Benjamin Franklin International School (BFIS) is a Candidate School* for the Middle Years Programme. This school is pursuing authorization as an IB World School. These are schools that share a common philosophy—a commitment to high quality, challenging, international education that BFIS believes is important for our students.

*Only schools authorized by the IB Organization can offer any of its four academic programmes: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), the Diploma Programme, or the Career-related Programme (CP).  Candidate status gives no guarantee that authorization will be granted. Flex Program

FLEX (Further Learning Experiences) at BFIS is a program designed to foster curiosity, creativity, and self-directed learning. It empowers students to explore diverse interests and forge their own educational pathways with the support of faculty and community members. Every other school day, students have dedicated time for FLEX courses, which are offered in four "seasons" throughout the year. These courses, ranging from bicycle repair and French conversation to chess and peer mediation, change every 8-9 weeks to adapt to student interest and provide a wide array of learning opportunities.

For 10th-grade students, FLEX introduces them to the IB Middle Years Programme's culminating project: the MYP Personal Project. Students identify a personal interest and, with guidance from supervisors, create a product that reflects their learning journey. This independent project strengthens essential skills like research, planning, and reflection, celebrating each student's creativity and growth as they prepare for the final years of their education.

Advisory Program

The BFIS Secondary Advisory Program supports students' personal, social, and academic growth by fostering a strong sense of belonging and community. Through every-other day advisory sessions, students engage in social-emotional learning, restorative practices, and activities that promote wellbeing, digital citizenship, and self-management skills. The program also builds connections across grade levels through the House Program and encourages student leadership and voice. Rooted in the BFIS Core Values, and aligned with the IB Learner Profile Traits and Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills, advisory helps students develop as compassionate, reflective, and responsible members of our school community.

Global Citizenship and Action

The Citizenship and Action school program empowers students to become active, responsible global citizens. By engaging with real-world issues and promoting social and cultural awareness, the program nurtures international mindedness and a sense of shared responsibility. Through hands-on projects and community involvement, students develop empathy, critical thinking, and a commitment to positive change—key qualities for thriving in an interconnected world.
