Learning Science by Doing Science

Today grade 8 students launched bottle rockets as a culminating project for their units of study on astronomy and physics. This project allowed students to work through the engineering design process as they researched, prototyped, tested, and refined their rockets over several months. The students built their rockets in the BFIS Makerspace, with many students 3D printing various components of their rocket. In the final competition, all students were able to achieve liftoff, with many rockets reaching impressive heights of 20m or more! Awards were given to the following winners:

HIGHEST ALTITUDE WITH THE TRADITIONAL LAUNCH PAD
1. Mario Subirá - 23m

2. Daniela del Olmo & Clara Llorach - 18m

2. Pau Tong Lin Xu & Daniel Trachtenberg - 18m

2. Ianthe Schnitzler - 18m

3. Catherine Heurtel & Ada Buyukbay - 17m

HIGHEST ALTITUDE WITH THE CLAMPING LAUNCH PAD

1. Daniel Samit & Alberto Castiñeiras - 32m

2. Jim Conner - 30m

3. Sam Harris & Varvara Naumova - 28m
