We are excited to kick off the 2021-22 school year! We hope you all had a wonderful summer break and come back with charged batteries. Here at BFIS, summer has been very intense, full of meetings, planning and summer constructions restoring the Orwell Building.  Here below you will find all the information you need to start the new school year. We can wait to see you all again!

Back to School Message from Kristy Csensich
Kristy Csensich

Kristy Csensich, Early Childhood and Elementary Principal

Dear EC/ES Families,

While the summer holidays always end much too fast, I truly look forward to the opening days of school, when students, teachers, and parents arrive with new energy and excitement about the year to come. I am eager to meet all of you and to begin our work together as we welcome students back to school for the 2021-2022 school year!

I began meeting with teachers, parents, and administrative team members in January in preparation for my new role as the Elementary Principal at BFIS. Since that time, I have been impressed by the sense of community and responsibility for continuous improvement that everyone has shared. Some of the resonating messages I have heard are:

  • We want our children to be healthy, happy, and contributing global citizens.
  • We want our children to develop a lifelong love of learning and to take on challenges with enthusiasm.
  • We want to maintain our strong sense of community and belonging at school.

Covid has had a strong impact on school communities around the world, requiring us to be dynamic and ready to shift at any time, while still keeping our students and our mission as our focus. Here at BFIS, we continue to adapt to changing situations and guidelines, adjusting our teaching, learning, and school procedures as needed. As we begin the year, there will be a few changes that are important to note. All staff and students will wear masks for the first two weeks of school, at all times. Arrival and dismissal times and locations are still staggered, but have been revised a bit, allowing third through fifth grade students to enter campus and their classrooms independently. Teachers will eagerly await them at their classroom doors. Stable groups at a grade level will be able to mix with one another, providing a mask is worn and physical distancing is maintained. While parents are not permitted on campus, we will continue to do our best to keep you connected through online means.

While the past few years have been challenging ones, I feel fortunate to be leading a school community that has a history of strong partnerships. I believe these partnerships are the foundation of our work, and I look forward to listening, observing, and engaging with all of you as we help support our children through another wonderful year of learning.

Warmly,

Kristy Csensich
Elementary School Principal

Estimadas familias,

Afectuosamente,

Kristy Csensich
Directora de Ed. Infantil y Primaria

Arrival and Dimissal

Given the current situation with COVID-19 and the direction of the Generalitat, all students will arrive and leave the campus in their stable groups.

Early Childhood:

  • Arrival at 8:45 h
  • Dismissal at 15:40 h (14:40 h on Wednesdays)

Elementary School:

  • Arrival between 8:30-8:43 h
  • Dismissal between 15:40-15:55 h (14:40-15:55 h on Wednesdays)

Please, send your child to school with two masks, two filled water bottles, and their school supplies.

Attendance Policy and Tardy Procedures

But when kids are absent for an average of just two days of school per month—even when the absences are excused– it can have a negative impact. These absences can affect kids as early as Kindergarten. As a parent, you can prepare your child for a lifetime of success by making regular school attendance a priority

Being on Time

Being on time to school is important at BFIS as classroom instruction starts promptly at 8:35 am.  Punctual arrival at school is another important factor for a student’s academic success, and it also provides the student with a smooth transition to start the school day.

Please read the Attendance Policy and Tardy Procedures included in the EC/ES Handbook

Use of Microwaves for Grades 4 and 5

4th and 5th graders are allowed to use the microwave.  4th and 5th grade students may use the microwaves under the following conditions:

  • Parents must commit to having the food placed in microwave-safe containers.
  • *Microwave approved plastic containers will be allowed and students should not put any metal items in the microwave.
  • Students can heat their food for up to 2 -3 minutes as we want to avoid students getting burned.
  • Students must remain at the microwave while using it (they should not walk away while his or her food cooks) and he or she can not remove someone else's food from the microwave.
  • We ask that you refrain from sending unhealthy items, such as Yatekomo noodles, because we are working hard with students to reinforce the idea of healthy eating.
  • If the student’s food explodes or spills in the microwave, students must clean up spills.
  • Students have to clean the microwave with wipes after using it.

Students that do not follow the above expectations will have their privileges rescinded.

Message from the MSHS Principal

Dear MS/HS Parents,

I hope your summer went as well and you were able to enjoy some quality family time.

We have been hard at work this summer navigating what it will look like to ensure student safety, academic learning and personal/social education. I am so proud of the positive attitude displayed by our MSHS Staff, and am confident this caring culture will carry over to our students. It has been a great start to the year welcoming our new staff and leadership. Our administrative team has been very impressed with the enthusiasm and professionalism of our new teachers.

We will have a variety of changes as a result of the pandemic. We will continue with staggered arrival and dismissal times, and students going through the school day in what are termed “stable groups”. The great news this year is the stable groups will be by grade level, not small groups within each grade. Students will have exponentially greater opportunities to spend time with their friends and not have to be in the same classroom all day. IB students will also  be considered a stable group as their schedule demands they have mixed classes. Stable grade level groups will also stay together during break time and play time after lunch... a big improvement from last year´s mandates. We will continue the policy of wearing masks at all times during the first two weeks of school, and then indoors after that as suggested by the government. Social distancing inside and outside the classroom will continue as a prudent approach to student safety. Inside the classroom, students will be in desks that are set apart from each other in accordance with government directives.

We are all looking forward to getting into the routines of school, with an emphasis on safety. We are excited about greeting your child on September 1st, and working together with you in support of your child throughout the year.

All the best.

Richard Nies
MS/HS Principal

Estimadas familias

Richard Nies
Director de Secundaria y Bachillerato

Technology Agreement for Middle and High School

Middle School Grades 6 - 8

BFIS transitioned to 1:1 devices to enhance the learning experience for students in the 2018-2019 school year. Chromebooks were provided by the school, which worked with the technology BFIS had at that time. With the transition to the new middle school building, we have made major improvements with our technologies, especially in the MS classrooms and beyond. In order to take advantage of these improvements as well as the evolving curriculum that teachers are providing, BFIS has made the decision to shift to Bring Your Own Device (B.Y.O.D.) for all middle school students as soon as possible while honoring our commitment to you.

So, what does that mean for Middle School students in the 2021-2022 school year? We will continue to meet our commitment to students and families to provide Chromebooks for the entirety of their middle school years.  However, with the decision to expand our Bring Your Own Device (B.Y.O.D) program to Grades 6-12, BFIS is recommending that families, who are able, provide their own device for students to use in school. Your children will have a much smoother experience regarding technology with a laptop that can more easily keep up with the technologies in the school already.  Students can opt out of the Chromebook at any time if they decide to switch to B.Y.O.D.  Families are responsible for the maintenance and management of this device.

The requirements for Bring Your Own Device:

  • Windows, macOS (preferred), iPadPro
  • USB-C Type Charger
  • Memory: 8Gb
  • Storage Capacity: 256Gb SSD. (512Gb recommended)
  • Minimum processor: Intel Core i5
  • Wi-Fi AC Integrated
  • Bluetooth
  • Keyboard (or bluetooth keyboard for iPadPro)
  • 720p front camera

Middle School Technology Agreement 2021-2022

High School Grades 9-12

BFIS has a bring your own device (BYOD) approach for grades 9 - 12 to enhance and extend learning. This document below outlines the basis and expectations for these programs. In preparation for next fall, please:

Read this letter thoroughly with your child and let us know about any questions you have.

Discuss the educational purpose and behavioral expectations of the devices with your child (explained below; BFIS will continue to work on this through class dialogue, Advisory and Wellness).

Please review the recommendations for a suitable device and let us know if you have any questions.

Welcome Letter from Laura Blair, IB Coordinator
Laura Blair

Dear BFIS parents and students,

I hope you've shared a relaxing and rejuvenating summer with friends and family.  We are excited to have our students back on campus as we look forward to the 2021/22 school year.  We´ve built resilience as a community over the last months as we´ve navigated the logistics of continued learning during a worldwide pandemic and we are ready to tackle any new challenges that come our way with our core values as our focus. Together, we will continue our commitment to the IB philosophy of “developing inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through international understanding and respect.”  This mission echoes the core values BFIS holds dear, demonstrating that an IB education is the perfect fit for our community as the appropriate culminating educational experience before our young people head to university.

I am pleased to continue in my third year as IB Coordinator and am passionate about working with 9th-12th graders through their journey as pre-IB and IB students. This is my 11th year at BFIS, where I have served as a classroom teacher and as part of the leadership team. I will continue teaching this year in tandem with IB coordination.  This year we will also be launching an extensive IB evaluation process which happens every 5 years in the program.  Through this evaluation, I will lead our community in a thorough investigation of every aspect of our program, identifying where we shine and creating objectives for areas where more work is needed.  I am enthusiastic about this process and look forward to showing evidence of our continued mission for excellence in the IB program we offer at BFIS.

There is no doubt we´ve all grown as we´ve adapted to the challenges that the pandemic has thrown our way.  Let´s acknowledge where we´ve been, and use this as a launching pad for where we want to go as we continue to take care of ourselves and each other this year. My continued goal is to connect with the BFIS community and strengthen our IB program through shared vision, honest communication, collaboration, and celebration of our students.  I am not only an educator at BFIS, I am also a parent. As the mother of two BFIS students, I believe deeply in our school and I look forward to the many opportunities we´ll have to learn and grow together this year.

Kind regards,

Laura Blair
IBDP Coordinator and Teacher

Estimadas familias,

Saludos cordiales,

Laura Blair
Coordinadora de IBDP y Profesora de Secundaria y Bachillerato

Welcome letter from Rhonda Leshman, Grades 11 and 12 Counselor and College Counselor
Rhonda Leshman

Dear BFIS Families,

Welcome to the 2021-22 school year!  I trust students are feeling rejuvenated and relaxed after  summer vacation! I know the summer included a big move for many of you and hopefully you are comfortable in the vibrant city of Barcelona and can make use of community support and resources to get settled as quickly as possible.  For me, the summer was spent reconnecting with friends and family and it feels invigorating to have slowed the pace and spent quality time with loved ones.

At BFIS, I wear a few different hats.  I am the social-emotional Counselor for grades 11 and 12 and am available to discuss challenges, concerns of students and parents as well as celebrate accomplishments and everything in between!   This is my 16th year working in private schools and my 3rd year at BFIS.  There are so many things I love about the BFIS community starting with the ‘family feel’ and more than anything, I hope students feel like BFIS is their second home.

My second hat is being the College Counselor. In this role, I’m creating a comprehensive, four-year program that helps students learn more about themselves, their interests, and aptitudes.  The vision is for students to have a strong degree of self-awareness as they go through high school and make decisions about university studies.

With the continuing pandemic, unfortunately, college admissions officers will not be able to travel and visit campuses in person. Therefore, I will maintain an ongoing list of online information sessions so students and parents can learn about these university options in online sessions that often take place in the evening or weekends.  The schedule will be shared in the Weekly message from the Marketing and Communications office in the ‘College Corner’ so please look for it and register for sessions of interest.

Please reach out with any questions and best wishes to all for a productive and rewarding school year for all.

Rhonda Leshman
Grades 11 & 12 Counselor and College Counselor

Estimadas familias,
